Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit: UCLH
NCL WideUniversity College London Hospitals (UCLH) operate the Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) for North Central London at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). The HASU acts as the receiving centre for patients presenting with a Stroke in all of North Central London. HASUs bring experts and equipment under one roof to provide world-class treatment 24 hours a day, reducing death rates and long-term disability.
UCLH also operate the Pre-Hospital Video Triage (PVT) service for stroke across all of London. Paramedic crews assessing a potential stroke will contact the stroke specialists at UCLH to assess the case and advise the most appropriate destination.
The HASU includes:
- rapid assessment, patients will arrive at the hospital Emergency Stroke Unit and be rapidly assessed by the specialist team at the earliest opportunity
- early treatment, using clot-busting drugs (thrombolysis) and clot removal (thrombectomy), if the scan shows they are needed
- 24 hours a day, seven days a week monitoring and physiological intervention in a high-dependency bed
- a multi-disciplinary specialist team on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This includes consultant neurologists, neurosurgeons, interventional radiologists, specialist nurses and therapists
- smooth transfer of care to onward hospitals (if needed).
