The Barnet Learning Disabilities Service is an integrated specialist service, consisting of the following professions:

  • psychiatry
  • psychology
  • learning disability nursing
  • physiotherapy
  • occupational therapy
  • speech and language therapy
  • social work.

The service works with people aged 18+ who have a learning disability, together with their families and carers.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusions

Eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • significant impairment of intellectual functioning (usually defined as full-scale IQ below 70)
  • significant impairment of adaptive/social functioning
  • recognised before the age of 18.

In order to establish whether someone meets these criteria, an eligibility assessment will sometimes need to be carried out. This enables the team to assess all three areas mentioned above. At this assessment, the service will also find out more about someone’s difficulties and consider if they are the best team to help.

If social care input is needed, then an individual must also meet the Care Act criteria. If they are under 25, they will receive social care through the 0-25 service.

The service is unable to provide a service to those who have a learning difficulty solely.
