Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

NCL Wide

PrEP Eligibility

PrEP is for anybody at higher risk of acquiring HIV. This includes:

  • gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men
  • trans people and their partners
  • women and other people whose partner is a man who has sex with men
  • people who have sex in countries with high HIV prevalence
  • sex workers or
  • people who inject chems or party drugs and share needles.

PrEP Access

For Camden, Islington, Haringey and Barnet direct patients to CNWL clinics. Patients can self-book an appointment to start or continue PrEP.

If patients are having difficulties booking a PrEP appointment, they can email their name and phone number to cnwl.prepuserfeedback@nhs.net and a member of staff will get back to them.

If patients are interested in PrEP but unwilling or unable to attend a sexual health clinic, GPs can refer them for a phone assessment. The medication will then be posted to a nominated address.

To do this the GP:

  • arrange baseline tests – eGFR, HIV, Hep B, Hep C, urine analysis + STI screen (syphilis serology, and chlamydia and gonorrhoea at sites of exposure - genital, rectal and/or pharyngeal)
  • email test results and request for PrEP (make sure to include patient's phone number) to cnw-tr.sexualhealthreferrals.cnwl@nhs.net

For Enfield direct patients to call the Echo Sexual Services to book an appointment.

Increasing PrEP uptake within Black African communities

There is a push to increase the uptake of PrEP amongst heterosexual men and women of Black African ethnicity, as people of Black African ethnicity are the second most impacted group by HIV in the UK yet uptake of PrEP remains low.

CNWL has worked with community partners Umoja Health Forum and Embrace UK Community Support Centre to co-design a new HIV prevention resource specifically for Black African communities. A digital copy of the booklet Protect yourself from Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is available in English. (See Resources).

Additional support on HIV prevention and sexual health

Until June 2025 (inclusive), Aymara Social Enterprise will provide support to migrant groups in North Central London, with a particular focus on HIV prevention and sexual health. Their approach covers wider determinants of health such as help with housing, employment and immigration status. They are working with a wide range of migrant groups, but are specialists at working with Latin American communities. If you have Spanish and Portuguese speaking patients who could benefit from their services, Aymara can provide a one to one conversation, offering advice and referral to any other services they might need. To refer to them please email patient contact details to contact@aymara.uk.
