Early Pregnancy Assessment & Gynaecology Emergency Diagnostic Unit: WH
NCL WideThe Women's Diagnostic Unit at Whittington Health (WH) offers assessment of women and birthing people with gynaecology emergencies. It also runs an early pregnancy service, including an early pregnancy walk-in service and a range of clinics.
Early Pregnancy Service
WH's Early Pregnancy Service cares for women and birthing people up to 17 weeks and six days pregnancy with problems including:
- pain and/or bleeding
- miscarriage
- ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that is not located in the uterus, which can cause pain and bleeding)
- hyperemesis (severe vomiting)
It also sees women who have had previous miscarriages, ectopic and molar pregnancies. For management of miscarriage, the service offers expectant, medical and surgical options, including MVA.
Women with hyperemesis in early pregnancy can have IV fluids and antiemetics as a day-case rather than being admitted.
Walk-in service
Women and birthing people with an emergency during early pregnancy should come to the walk-in service between Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm. A referral is not needed for the walk-in service. Outside of these hours, go to the Emergency Department.
If you have an emergency during early pregnancy, please attend either:
- Early Pregnancy Walk-In, Betty Mansell Ward, Level 3, Kenwood Wing, or
- Emergency Department, Highgate Hill entrance.
Early Pregnancy Clinic
Appointments are available throughout the week.
Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic
This clinic is on a Wednesday afternoon for women and birthing people who have experienced three or more miscarriages.
