Women's Ambulatory Day Unit: NMUH

Provided By
North Middlesex Women's Ambulatory Day Unit (WADU) is a service for acute gynaecological and early pregnancy problems. The service looks after women up to 18 weeks of pregnancy for a variety of problems in a specially designed emergency area, including clinic rooms, scan facilities and treatment areas.
Opening times
- WADU: Every day, 8am-8pm
- Early pregnancy unit (EPU) scanning: Monday to Sunday 9am-5pm, after 5-8pm emergencies only
- Last referral accepted at 7pm
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusions
- early pregnancy problems <18 weeks of pregnancy (miscarriage, ectopic, PUL)
- positive pregnancy test with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding
- hyperemesis (nausea and vomiting in pregnancy)
- gynaecological problems more than six weeks post-partum
- up to six weeks post- op for gynaecological procedures
- bartholin's abscess/cyst for Word catheter
- non-pregnant patients with abdominal pain can be referred by discussion with the gynaecology on-call team
- coil check after insertion during caesarean section (Miss Rouabhi's list, WADU Lead)
Exclusions
- children <16 years old unless agreed by SpR/consultant/and paediatrician
- postmenopausal bleeding (PMB) should not be referred to WADU. Arrange referral to the rapid access service via GP
- menorrhagia if Hb is 80g/l or less
- normal early pregnancy seen on a scan performed within the last seven days unless new bleeding has occurred
- women who are 18 weeks' gestation should be referred to the Obstetric Assessment Unit (Maternity triage)
- clinically unstable patients should be seen in A&E
- from 7pm-8am patients should be seen in A&E
How to Refer

Acute gynaecological cases in the non-pregnant women must be discussed with the consultant in EPU for an USS.
Letter
Referral methods: Email, Hand to Patient
Patients can walk in with a GP referral. They can also be referred by: NMUH A&E, Fertility, BPAS, local Sexual Health clinics; NUPAS; Marie Stopes; and 111.

Self-referral
Self-referral is available for patients with recurrent miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and molar pregnancy.
