Diagnostic Spirometry: WH

Haringey

Spirometry comprises several breathing tests to measure the function of the lung. It is essential for confirming an accurate diagnosis of COPD and may aid in the diagnosis of asthma and other lung conditions. This practice is in line with NICE 2010 guidelines.

The Whittington Health service provides diagnostic spirometry from two community-based centres; Lordship Lane and Hornsey Central and, if requested/indicated, post-bronchodilator spirometry and reversibility studies FENO Testing (from November 2023).

The referring clinician must clearly indicate rationale/question on the referral form, particularly if a referral is made for monitoring purposes. If post-bronchodilator or reversibility testing is required, the patient must be prescribed a Salbutamol inhaler and spacer for the test.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusions

  • patients requiring supportive/confirmatory evidence for a diagnosis of COPD or asthma
  • patients with known diagnosis who have deteriorating symptoms where measuring lung function will help with further management.

Please note: If post-bronchodilator or reversibility testing is required, the patient must be prescribed a Salbutamol inhaler and spacer for the test.
