Ophthalmology Community Service

Enfield

The service is consultant-led and delivered by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians; doctors, optometrists and nurses.

It sees patients for routine ophthalmic conditions with the following conditions:

  • glaucoma
  • cataract
  • age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • blurred vision
  • watery eyes
  • dry eyes
  • blepharitis
  • floaters/flashing lights
  • visual field defects
  • possible squint in children

Wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD): Please refer urgently when a patient over 50 years of age presents with sudden or rapid onset of the following signs and symptoms:

  • decrease visual acuity
  • blurred vision
  • netamorphosia e.g. lines appear crooked or wavy
  • central paracentral scotoma
  • difficulty reading
  • macular haemorrhage or exudates

Eligibility Criteria

Exclusions

The below are a list of exclusions:

  • emergency care services
  • patients not registered with a NHS Enfield GP
  • diabetic retinopathy screening and treatment
  • patients with very complex post-operative or post-traumatic complications
  • cases of suspected cancer
  • Patients who require a second surgical opinion
  • patients in immediate need of emergency or highly complex specialist surgical care

All routine referrals should include details from the optometrist if available. Please discuss choice of provider with each patient. Each of the providers is expected to meet the six weeks target for all patient appointments.
