Soft Tissue Sarcoma Referral Pathway

A new diagnostic pathway has been developed for adult soft tissue sarcoma (STS) referrals in London using a Hub and Spoke model. GPs can refer patients with high clinical suspicion of STS (adults only) to Wood Green CDC. Initial ultrasound imaging is advised at a local provider.
Patients may then be referred to Wood Green CDC for MRI if the local ultrasound report indicates:

• a lesion concerning for a malignant soft tissue tumour
• a heterogeneous and vascular lesion
• a lesion deep to the fascia and not in keeping with a lipomatous tumour
• an indeterminate lesion in someone with a predisposing condition (e.g. neurofibromatosis).

Referrals are triaged by an MSK Radiologist at Wood Green, who will advise on the next imaging steps.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusions

• adult patients aged 18+
• ambulant or partially ambulant patients
  • the CDC can accommodate patients who can move in and out of a wheelchair independently or with minimal assistance. A hoist is available at the CDC but patients should be advised to bring their own sling if possible
• non-MSK ultrasound for gynae & abdo only

Exclusions

• paediatrics
• transport patients
• obstetrics
