Pharmacy Needle Exchange Programme
NCL WideThe Needle Exchange Programme (also known as the Needle and Syringe Programme) is part of a wider approach to prevent and reduce drug-related harms and transmission of blood-borne diseases (e.g. hepatitis and HIV). This is done through the provision of sterile injecting equipment, specialist advice and information on treatment options, signposting to related health services, and harm reduction (e.g. guidance on safer injecting).
Community pharmacy needle exchange services often have contact with injecting drug users who are not in contact with other services, and therefore the community pharmacist can play a key role in supporting engagement with services, as well as in providing harm reduction advice and equipment.
The Needle Exchange Programme is an open-access service; referrals are not necessary. If sharps cannot be returned to the service that supplied them, they can be returned to community pharmacies commissioned to provide needle exchange services.
