Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Service: UCLH

UCLH offers an outpatient-only service for these conditions, based on guided self-management, according to NICE guidelines.

The aims of the service are to:

  • Help patients understand their condition
  • Enable them to develop helpful coping strategies to manage symptoms
  • Reduce distress and disability
  • Improve quality of life

Patients are assessed for an hour by an experienced physician and may then be offered various interventions such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics and psychological therapy for coping with chronic physical conditions. 


Eligibility Criteria

Inclusions

  • Adults aged 18+
  • Basic diagnostic criteria for the conditions are met (as per referral form)
  • No clinical evidence of secondary causes of fatigue (as per referral form) 
  • Routine blood investigations have been performed (as per referral form)
  • Fatigue secondary to long COVID (as per referral form)

Exclusions

  • Very severe cases i.e. bedbound: refer to domiciliary rehabilitation service
  • Severe psychiatric conditions (severe depression/anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, eating disorder, psychological trauma, personality disorder) if precluding engagement in guided self-management
