Fitting and Removal of Intra-Uterine Device and Intra-Uterine Systems LCS

This locally commissioned service (LCS) supports the provision, fitting, checking, monitoring and removal of intra-uterine contraceptive devices (IUD/IUS) within primary care.

The service has the following objectives:

  • provide an accessible IUD/IUS insertion and removal service in general practice as part of a range of contraception choices for women
  • raise awareness of the benefits of IUD/IUS by providing high quality advice, support and information on the full range of contraception methods to all women seeking contraception, and particularly to women aged under 25
  • provide information on sexual health promotion to women of all ages and particularly to women aged under 25
  • provide an accessible and timely post-coital fitting for emergency contraception
  • provide accessible treatment for the management of menorrhagia
  • ensure that all women aged 15-24 who receive this service also receive a chlamydia screen (referral where appropriate).
  • ensure that all women are assessed for risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV (referral where appropriate).
