Emergency Hormonal Contraception (pharmacy-delivered) LCS

This locally commissioned service (LCS) is delivered by a number of community pharmacies (see list attached) and aims to minimise unplanned pregnancy in young people and adults. This service is provided within the criteria specified by the Patient Group Direction (see attached).

Eligibility Criteria

  • aged 13 to 24 (inclusive) requesting emergency hormonal contraception

This LCS involves (see service specification attached for more details):

  • the timely provision of oral contraception or referral to sexual health accredited clinics such as the young people sexual health service, integrated sexual health service, if provision cannot be made in the required timeframe
  • providing advice and written information on safe sexual health practices, including provision of condoms or pregnancy tests
  • referral to the Long Acting Reversible Contraception Public Health LCS for long-term protection
