Bladder & Bowel Care Service: WH

The Whittington Health (WH) Bladder and Bowel Care Service provides assessment, treatment and support to adults with bowel and/or bladder problems. The team consists of specialist continence nurses, pelvic health physiotherapists and continence assistants.

Services offered include:

  • pelvic floor muscle training
  • bladder retraining
  • assessment and management of constipation and faecal incontinence
  • assessment and management of bladder dysfunction
  • containment products/devices
  • anal irrigation/anal plugs.

Clinics are held at Hornsey Central Health Centre, Hornsey Rise Health Centre, River Place Health Centre and Lordship Lane Primary Care Centre.

Housebound patients will have their initial continence assessment undertaken by the district nurses and are then annually assessed by member of the service.

The service also offers training programmes for district nurses, students, health visitors, primary care teams, care homes and voluntary agencies.


Eligibility Criteria

Inclusions

Adult patients registered with a Haringey or Islington GP with a condition such as:

  • overactive bladder
  • functional, stress and/or urge incontinence
  • neurological bladder and bowel incontinence
  • nocturia
  • nocturnal enuresis
  • constipation
  • pelvic organ prolapse.

Exclusions

  • children
  • catheter-related problems.
