Statutory Medical Examiner System: Update on 9 September changes

Islington

The medical examiner service becomes statutory in England and Wales on 9 September 2025. After this date, a death cannot be registered without a medical examiner review.

In preparation, the Whittington Medical Examiner Office is asking practices to ensure they have received the new version MCCD books (not to be used before 9 September).

Please note: until 9 September, the current rules on who can complete an MCCD will apply and the old forms must be used. The Whittington Medical Examiner Office does however recommend all deaths are referred to the medical examiner in preparation for the statutory change. An extended hours service is available for urgent faith deaths between 7.30-9.30am weekends and bank holidays.

From 9 September, an increased pool of doctors can complete the MCCD, and cremation forms will no longer be required. Further updates regarding this will be shared with practices.

For more information, or if you have any questions, there will be a drop-in session from 1pm to 2pm on 2 September.

Alternatively, contact the Whittington Medical Examiner Office via email.
