Detecting atrial fibrillation in primary care: AliveCor Kardia devices

NCL Wide

Practices have been issued with Kardia AliveCor devices to improve atrial fibrillation (AF) detection rates locally. The device offers the following benefits:

  • diagnostic quality electrocardiogram (ECG) on your smartphone or tablet
  • records single-lead and six-lead capability
  • takes just 30 seconds and offers instant analysis
  • captures events immediately (possible AF, tachycardia, bradycardia and unclassified)
  • does not require Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

The device works with most common smartphone and tablets (see the AliveCor compatibility page for full details). The app is free to download from iTunes or Google Play.

The Academic Health Science Network recommends the use of the Kardia app. Use the guest feature to take patient ECGs. Ignore prompts to upgrade to KardiaCare/Premium.

It is recommended that the device be used opportunistically as a screening tool in long term condition reviews and health checks in the over-65s. If a patient is identified with possible AF, it is recommended that they be referred for a 12-lead ECG to confirm diagnosis.

Kardia Mobile is recommended by NCIE as an option for detecting AF for people with suspected paroxysmal AF, who present with symptoms such as palpitations, and are referred for ambulatory ECG monitoring by a clinician.

Data processing

As requested by the NHS England Transformation Directorate in relation to information governance requirements, and in accordance with AliveCor's Privacy Policy, the NHS will now be a Data Controller when using KardiaMobile technology.

A Data Processing Agreement (DPA) is required between your NHS entity and AliveCor before you use the KardiaMobile technology. AliveCor's terms of service and privacy policy have been updated and its standard DPA will apply. Please reach out to AliveCor if you require a different DPA to be signed.

Data Processing Impact Assessment templates for each NHS use case are also available if required. If you need DCB0129 documentation, contact e: uksupport@alivecor.com
