NCL Perinatal Pelvic Health Service

The Perinatal Pelvic Health Service (PPHS) focuses on the prevention, identification and timely treatment for a range of pelvic health issues antenatally, and for up to 12 months after birth. 

The clinics are run by specialist pelvic health physiotherapists and midwives, who offer a comprehensive review of each persons symptoms and work together to develop a treatment and management plan.

Antenatal patients will receive their pelvic health support from the pelvic health physiotherapy team at the hospital they are receiving their maternity care.

Postnatal patients will receive their pelvic health support from the PPHS team at community sites across NCL.

Conditions treated:

  • Urinary incontinence 
  • Urinary urgency/ frequency/ nocturia
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Faecal incontinence
  • Constipation/ defecatory dysfunction
  • Sexual/ perineal/ scar pain 

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusions

  • Any antenatal women/ birthing person who is receiving their maternity care from an NCL hospital (Barnet, North Middlesex, Royal Free London, Whittington or University College Hospital).
  • Any postnatal women/ birthing person who is an NCL resident.
  • Any pelvic floor dysfunction (urinary/ faecal incontinence/pelvic organ prolapse/ sexual pain/ constipation)

Exclusions

  • Any urgent conditions: perineal would breakdown/ infection/ granulation tissue/ signs urinary retention/ overflow incontinence/ cauda equina symptoms (saddle anaesthesia, loss of bladder/ bowel control)
  • OASI patients - they will remain under care at the hospital they received their maternity care
  • Any pregnancy related musculoskeletal conditions, eg: pelvic girdle pain/ rectus diastasis.
  • None NCL resident and none NCL maternity care
