Ear, Nose & Throat: RFL

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) team at Royal Free London (RFL) offers both routine and urgent ENT services.
Urgent ENT referrals for adults and children >2 years must be referred on the ENT urgent review clinic referral form.
The following surgeries are offered:
- general ENT
- rhinology
- otology
- head and neck
- facial plastics
- voice disorder
Additionally, the thyroid and endocrine surgery team diagnoses and treats a range of endocrine conditions, such as thyroid nodules, goitres and adrenal tumours.
An endocrine: thyroid and parathyroid service, as well as an audiology service, is also provided.
Eligibility Criteria
Inclusions
The ENT urgent review clinic reviews patients with one of the following conditions only. Referrals for other conditions will be rejected.
- otitis externa (non-responsive to two weeks of drops, for example Sofradex)
- foreign body in the ear (batteries must attend ED)
- isolated facial palsy (if acute otitis media, send to ED)
- nasal fracture (exclude septal haematoma)
- recurrent acute epistaxis
- sudden sensorineural hearing loss

For urgent referrals, complete the ENT urgent review clinic referral and send to rf.entadmin@nhs.net
Patients should be advised to come immediately to the emergency department, with a referral letter addressed to the medical team on-call or with the completed EMIS form.

For routine (non-urgent) referrals please ensure that the referral letter includes:
- full GP and practice details
- complete and correctly spelt patient name and date of birth
- all relevant clinical history
- any relevant pathology or scan results
- whether an interpreter is required
- patient contact telephone numbers
- patient’s NHS number.
