Mental health trust publishes personality disorder medication-reduction information

NCL Wide

Camden and Islington Personality Disorder Service has developed this information document and workbook to support safe, collaborative reduction of psychiatric medication for people with personality disorder, when appropriate.

The document emphasises that no medication is licensed to treat personality disorder itself, and that evidence for long term benefit of psychotropic medication in this population is limited.

Medication may be helpful short term for co-existing symptoms (such as anxiety, mood instability, sleep disturbance), but risks increase over time, particularly with polypharmacy.

This document is intended to be used alongside a trained clinician within the service with a structured deprescribing offer and is grounded in current NICE guidance and lived experience expertise.
