Medicine Supply Notification: Nifedipine (Adipine® XL) 30mg and 60mg modified-release tablets

NCL Wide

The Department of Health and Social Care has issued a Medicine Supply Notification for nifedipine (Adipine® XL) 30mg and 60mg modified-release tablets.

These are out of stock until the end of January 2026. Serious Shortage Protocols, SSP084 and SSP085 are in place.

Actions for prescribers

  • Do not initiate Adipine® XL tablets.
  • Review affected patients and, where supply is insufficient, switch to alternative nifedipine modified-release brands, e.g. Coracten® XL capsules. Consider patient suitability, including gelatin content and excipients.
  • Where switching is considered appropriate, ensure brand specification, patient counselling, and closer initial monitoring.
  • Refer to the supporting information for other alternatives to Coracten® XL capsules.

Further information is available via the Specialist Pharmacy Service Medicines Supply Tool (login required). ScriptSwitch® messages have been enabled to provide information on this shortage to support primary care.
