Measles update: Infection prevention and control measures in primary care

NCL Wide

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported an active measles outbreak across NCL, particularly in Enfield, with rising cases including some with no link to initial school clusters.

Most confirmed cases are in unvaccinated children and young people. There have also been several exposure incidents in general practice and urgent care settings, highlighting the need for strengthened infection prevention and control (IPC).

Primary care: actions to take

  • Review and reinforce local IPC protocols, including triage, isolation and personal protective equipment (PPE) use (National IPC Manual).
  • Ensure all staff are familiar with measles case definitions and management steps (National Measles Guidelines UK).
  • Display clear signage advising patients with fever and rash to inform staff on arrival.
  • Check staff measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination status and address any gaps urgently.
  • Report suspected measles cases to UKHSA immediately and follow escalation processes.

UKHSA North London continues to support community catch up clinics, in school vaccination and rapid contact tracing for unvaccinated household contacts.

The ICB thanks you for your continued efforts to protect patients and help limit further transmission.
