Know What You’re Drinking: Alcohol reduction campaign

Camden

Camden council is launching the Know What You’re Drinking campaign. This has been developed as an action from Camden’s alcohol strategy, which identifies drinkers aged 45 to 65 years old as a priority group for prevention.

Many do not recognise they are drinking at harmful levels due to the normalisation of alcohol and routines of regular drinking.

Residents reported finding it challenging to understand alcohol guidelines, with units found to be particularly confusing.

In affluent groups, social drinking is often tied to celebrations, networking, and leisure, but health concerns are a key motivator for change.

Campaign strategy and materials

Know What You’re Drinking signposts to the free TryDry app from Alcohol Change UK. Residents can understand what and when they’re drinking, and decide if they want to make a change. It also encourages Camden residents to contact their GP if they need more support to drink less alcohol.

Campaign materials include:

  • a printed leaflet with a unit calculator
  • a calendar for residents to record their drinks with a paper and pen
  • resources in community languages (Benagli and Somali available, other languages are available on request).

How can you help?

Share the campaign materials with your patients.

  • Know what you’re drinking posters will be sent to all Camden GP practices. These can be displayed in public areas of your practice.
  • Printed leaflets (with unit calculator and calendar) and translated resources can be requested by emailing, Lucy Lee, communications and engagement lead (health and wellbeing).
