Supporting Families When a Child Has Died Unexpectedly

NCL Child Death Review (CDR) partners are working with Child Bereavement UK to offer four three-hour interactive training sessions on supporting parents and families when a child dies.

The sessions aim to assist practitioners who may be identified as key workers for the CDR process, providing increased confidence in offering support appropriate to the family's needs.

Learning outcomes include being able to:

  • explore the impact on the family unit when a child dies
  • recognise physical and emotional reactions to grief
  • be aware of the incidence of child death and what research tells us about its impact
  • understand what parents may need when faced with the death of their child and gain increased confidence in offering support appropriate to their needs
  • explore the considerations around communicating with a dying child
  • relate theories of grief to the experiences of bereaved parents
  • develop self-awareness in relation to loss, grief and bereavement
  • understand the impact of a child’s death on professionals
  • consider ways to support yourself and colleagues.
