Prenatal Genomics Introduction

This two-hour, interactive training programme is an introduction to prenatal genetics and is intended for healthcare professionals who work in prenatal care settings and refer patients to clinical genetics.

The session will provide a practical guide to obtaining a genetic family history, including asking appropriate questions, initial assessment and referring to clinical genetics.

Learning outcomes include:

  • understanding the genetic predispositions to disease 
  • able to obtain a genetic family history
  • understanding when a genetics referral is appropriate and how to do this
  • understanding the different purposes of genetic and genomic testing in patients 
  • knowing how to ask difficult questions to obtain information about the genetic condition in the family
  • able to discuss the consequences of genetic test results with respect to the patient’s family members
  • able to evaluate and apply the skills necessary to support individuals who are considering a clinical genetics referral.
