NCL Health Equity Community of Practice: Developing patient health literacy

This Community of Practice session led by Catherine Wardle, Assistant Librarian at Whittington Health Library (and part of the NCL Librarian team) will explore some of the issues that health literacy poses.

Questions which will be covered include:

  • How is it relevant to our work and to our patients?
  • How it affects health outcomes?
  • What is the impact on individuals and groups with low health literacy?
  • What tools and techniques can be implemented to support patients’ understanding of their health conditions and medication instructions.

NCL Health Equity Community of Practice meetings are open to all primary care professionals working with deprived or underserved communities in NCL, providing an opportunity to explore a range of issues and topics that colleagues experience daily. They are a safe space to develop an understanding of the challenges in delivering care to underserved communities, share approaches and experiences to support each of us who work within these parameters.

The meetings run virtually on a monthly basis. Future topics will include supporting patients with reduced means, substance abuse and supporting refugees.
