CPD: The Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis & Management of COPD (cohort two)

This three-part e-learning module focuses on enhancing knowledge and skills in COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) diagnosis, management, and review, using evidence-based guidance.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of COPD and its treatment options, enabling them to provide effective care to patients.

It is suitable for nurses and allied health professionals.

The training sessions will be conducted online via Google Classroom and Google Meet, with coursework to be completed before each live session. The course is delivered over six weeks starting from 23 October to 4 December 2024. 

The learning outcomes are provided below and this module is a total of 10 hours, for which you will also receive a certificate. 

Learning outcomes 

  • apply the latest COPD guidance
  • understand the diagnostic criteria for a diagnosis 
  • identify the goals of COPD management 
  • understand the treatment options and tailor them to the patient 
  • optimise the non-pharmacological management options
  • recognise patients at risk of exacerbation and hospital admission and how to address this, knowing when to refer
  • provide a good quality review with supported self-management

  • structure and function of a normal respiratory system
  • COPD on the inside: the pathophysiological changes that occur in COPD
  • COPD on the outside: clinical signs and symptoms
  • the importance of history taking 
  • spirometry as the confirmatory test
  • making a diagnosis in line with current guidance

COPD Management: Treatment

Wednesday, 6th November 2024 / 9.00am

  • the aim of COPD management
  • the pharmacology of COPD
    • bronchodilators (SABAs, LABAs & LAMAs) 
    • inhaled corticosteroids in combination with LABA (ICS/LABA)
    • triple therapy (ICS/LABA/LAMA)
    • mucolytics 
  • current guidance on the management of COPD
  • the indications for ICS and de-escalation of ICS where appropriate
  • assessment and management of exacerbation

Providing an effective COPD review including non-pharmacological options

Post-module assessment

Wednesday, 4th December 2024 / 12.00pm

  • thirty minute quiz hosted in Google Classroom 
  • full feedback provided on marking
