CPD: The Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis and Management of Adult Asthma (Three-part training)

This three part e-learning module is for experienced nurses, nursing associates and allied health professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and skills within asthma, utilising the most up-to-date evidence-based guidance. LR Respiratory Training & Consultancy Ltd will deliver the webinars via Google Classroom and Google Meet. 

Please ensure you have completed Introduction to Asthma or you have experience of Adult Asthma Care in practice before registering.

The 10 hours of e-learning is spread over six weeks as above. You will receive a certificate on completion for 10 hours of CPD.

Unit 1: Diagnosis
To be completed between Monday 19 May and Monday 2 June

Part 1 e-learning (1.5-2 hours)

  • Setting the scene: asthma in the UK
  • Structure and function of a normal respiratory system
  • Asthma on the inside: the pathophysiological changes that occur in asthma
  • Asthma on the outside: clinical signs and symptoms
  • The importance of history taking and the relevance of objective tests
  • Assessing the probability of asthma
  • Making a diagnosis in line with current guidance

Unit 2: Asthma management - treatment
To be completed between Monday 2-16 June

Part 1 e-learning (1.5-2 hours) 

  • The aim of asthma management
  • The pharmacology of asthma:
    • Inhaled Corticosteroids
    • Inhaled Bronchodilators
    • Leukotriene Receptor Antagonists
  • Current guidance on the management of asthma
  • Stepping up and stepping down treatment
  • Assessment and management of acute asthma

Unit 3: Providing an effective asthma review - managing asthma challenges
To be completed between Monday 16-30 June

Part 1 e-learning (1.5-2 hours) 

  • Inhaler technique and tailoring the device to the patient
  • Overcoming non adherence
  • Recognising and addressing short acting beta₂ agonist (SABA) overuse
  • Identifying co-morbidities that can negatively impact asthma
  • Reducing hospital admissions: providing supported self-management

Post module self-assessment (30 mins): Quiz hosted in Google Classroom to complete. Full feedback given on marking.
