NHS App Ambassadors: Practice teams driving digital adoption

NCL Wide

Over the past year, Islington GP Federation has made significant progress in increasing NHS App adoption across the borough through its growing network of NHS App Ambassadors, through practice teams championing the NHS App and most recently a patient NHS App training initiative.

The borough now has 55 NHS App Ambassadors supporting digital engagement across 25 of its 30 practices, helping patients register for and make greater use of NHS App services. Their efforts have contributed to a 12.2% increase in NHS App registrations over the last year, demonstrating the value of NHS App Ambassadors and local champions in the practice teams, promoting and supporting access to digital healthcare services.

The impact is reflected in patient NHS App usage data. Compared with the previous year:

  • messages sent through the app increased by 78%
  • GP record views by 64%
  • repeat prescription orders by 28%
  • appointments booked through the app by 24%
  • and digital appointment cancellations by 53%

Monthly NHS App logins also increased by approximately 50,000, highlighting growing patient engagement and confidence in digital services.

Most recently, Islington GP Federation partnered with AbilityNet, the digital inclusion charity, to deliver a borough-wide patient webinar focused on improving digital skills and increasing confidence in using the NHS App. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% saying they would recommend the session to others.
