Help prevent delays to urgent suspected prostate cancer referrals

NCL Wide

To prevent delays in secondary care, GPs are requested to take the following actions before referring a patient on the urgent suspected prostate cancer pathway.

Actions:

  • elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, no urinary tract infection (UTI): refer with PSA result included with referral
  • abnormal prostate on digital rectal examination (DRE): refer and arrange PSA test in advance
  • include previous PSA results with all referrals
  • include an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) result from the last three months. Arrange prior to referral if results are not already available.

These results are needed before an multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) scan. Further details can be found in the pan-London guidance by Transformation Partners in Health and Care

If you are having technical issues logging PSA and EGFR tests on referral forms, contact Simon Evans.
