RFL update: Roll-out of paperless appointment letters

Paperless appointment letters will be rolled out at Royal Free London (RFL) from Wednesday 21 September 2022 for patients who have opted to receive digital communications.

From this date, patients who have chosen to receive paperless appointment letters will no longer be sent letters in the post. They will, however, receive a text alert notifying them that there is an appointment letter for them to view online via the RFL patient portal My RFL Care. Within the portal, patients can view and download their appointment letters quickly and securely in one accessible place, and they can also cancel and reschedule appointments.

Digital appointment letters will help to save the NHS money and reduce its environmental impact, saving on the amount of paper used as an organisation.

The following specialties will go live first, with all RFL departments expected to be able to offer patients paperless appointment letters by early October:

Royal Free Hospital (RFH)

  • Breast surgery and breast screening
  • Colorectal surgery
  • Diabetes and endocrine
  • Elderly medicine
  • Emergency department
  • Gastrointestinal and endoscopy
  • General and acute medicine
  • General surgery
  • Haematology
  • Infection
  • Liver surgery and liver medicine
  • Nephrology
  • Oncology and palliative care
  • Renal transplant
  • Stroke
  • Therapy services
  • Trauma and orthopaedics
  • Vascular surgery.

Barnet Hospital

  • Anaesthetic and theatres
  • Anticoagulation 
  • Critical care
  • Diabetes and endocrine
  • Elderly medicine
  • Emergency department
  • Gastroenterology
  • General surgery
  • Moxillofacial, ear, nose and throat and audiology
  • Obstetrics
  • Rheumatology
  • Stroke.

Chase Farm Hospital

  • Theatres.

Patients who prefer paper letters will still receive their letters by post as usual. Appointment text reminders will also continue for all patients regardless of whether they choose to go paperless.
