Primary care prescribers encouraged to review non-NCL formulary ONS products

NCL Wide

The NCL Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) Formulary in Adults - Primary Care Guidance document was updated in August 2022. Recent prescribing data analysis shows that the top five spend ONS products prescribed in NCL were not in line with approved NCL-preferred choices.

Primary care prescribers are encouraged to review patients currently prescribed a non-NCL formulary ONS product and consider changing to a cost-effective NCL-preferred alternative, where appropriate. Prescribing NCL first or second line preferred choices could potentially save up to £1.7 million (65% cost avoidance) per year.

Further guidance on prescribing ONS and supporting resources (including template patient letters) is available via the NCL Prescribing Quality Scheme (PQS) page below.

Please contact your Medicines Management Team for further advice/support in reviewing and changing to cost-effective alternative ONS.
