Practices are legally required to activate OpenSAFELY.

The service is run by NHS England and has the full support of the BMA & RCGP.

OpenSAFELY uses GP data for research.

Practices should have recently received an email (Subject: FOR ACTION: Practice managers - legal requirement to activate OpenSAFELY) describing next steps. Refer to that email, or follow these quick steps in SystmOne (TPP) and EMIS Web (Optum) to comply.

To reduce practice workload, the British Medical Association, the Royal College of General Practitioners and NHS England have jointly produced the following guidance.

• How-to guide to activate OpenSAFELY platform (download below). 
• A national Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA): there is no need for practices to create their own.
• A two page easy read explaining OpenSAFELY: for your website and patients.
• Text for your privacy notice and Record of Processing Activity (RoPA) is at the bottom of NHS England’s activation website.
